BREAKING NEWS: Load Test Not Required for IOOF/Old Miami County Courthouse
Collaborative approach between County and Historic Preservationists Prevent Large Expense
Earlier today, the Board of Commissioners of Miami County issued the below statement stating that no further testing would need to be completed for the stabilization of the IOOF/Old Miami County Courthouse in Downtown Troy.
For a few weeks, the owners of the building, the Troy Historic Preservation Alliance (THPA), has publicly stated that the load test once required by the county’s building department was duplicative and punitive. The Board of Commissioners cited further discussions on a collaborative meeting held on March 28th between the County’s Building Department and the THPA, in which the THPA’s engineers provided more detailed information. This additional information, followed by an inspection of the building, found that “structural elements of the building….were determined to be structurally sound”.
The removal of the additional testing accomplishes two important goals for the historic preservationists. First, it saves the group approximately $50,000 in additional costs that the testing would have cost. Second, today’s message from the Board of County Commissioners allows this stabilization project to be completed by the deadline of April 30th.

Well done. Thanks to the Miami county commissioners for listening and acting, and kudos to THPA for not giving up and presenting facts to substantiate the issue.
Yeah! FINALLY THPA is getting some governmental cooperation!
