City Council Committee to Tackle Recycling Again
A bid from Rumpke for recycling services come in much higher than anticipated.
On Monday, May 13th, five City Council committees will hold meetings starting at 6:00 p.m. to recommend legislative items for approval at the next City Council meeting. A full listing of the committees and the items up for discussion is shown below.
Perhaps the item that will garner the most interest is a renewed discussion on the city’s recycling service with Rumpke. Last month, this publication talked about how the city administration was putting the recycling service out to bid for at least a three-year contract and that City Council was being asked to authorize at least $535,000 a year for the service; anticipating 25% increase.
A Recycling Bid Comes Back
Council authorized the city to put the contract out to bid with the increased cost; and then one bid came back. According to the city, the costs were much higher than the city had anticipated.
Rumpke was the only company to supply a bid to the city, and their cost to the city to provide the service were well over the $535,000 threshold that the city council authorized last month. Currently, the city is paying $425,000 per year for the recycling service and the new bid provided is at least a 33% increase in cost.
Could the City Do it Cheaper?
In a memo to the City Council’s Finance Committee, the city administration believes that it is still cost-effective to have a private company provide the service and that the current rate structure can support the service. The memo is provided below:
The city administration is asking the City Council to increase the authorization from $535,000 that was approved last month to the new figures outlined above.
