Learning About Our Community: Demographics
American Structurepoint's Existing Conditions Report talks about the City's demographic structure
Earlier this week, this publication broadly discussed the Existing Conditions Report that was completed by American Structurepoint as part of the city’s updated to the Comprehensive Plan.
Today, this publication is focused on looking at one specific part of the report, the analysis of the demographics of the community. In reviewing the report, here were some of the themes that were brought out in terms of the city’s population:
Population Growth: Troy experienced a modest population growth of 2.7% from 2010 to 2020. This slow growth rate, while stable, suggests the city must attract new residents and businesses to sustain and enhance its economic vitality. The anticipated population increase up to 2050, based on linear, exponential, and step-down projections, indicates a gradual increase in demand for housing, services, and infrastructure.
Aging Population: The median age in Troy has increased from 38.0 in 2010 to 40.4 in 2020, aligning with state and national trends towards an aging population. This demographic shift poses challenges in healthcare, housing, and social services catering to an older demographic.
Household Composition: The increase in households, particularly those headed by individuals over 65, underscores the need for diverse housing options that cater to downsizing seniors and accessible living arrangements.
Economic Disparities: While Troy's poverty rate is lower than the state average, at 8.2% in 2020, economic disparities exist. Addressing these disparities through economic development initiatives and support services is crucial for fostering a more inclusive community.
Educational Attainment: The distribution of educational attainment in Troy reflects a workforce with a solid foundation of high school and some college education. However, to attract high-paying jobs and innovative industries, Troy may need to increase the proportion of residents with higher education degrees.
Some of the demographic facts point to some challenges that the Comprehensive Plan will need to recommend in order for the community to have economic prosperity in the future. Some of the challenges that the city will need to address include:
Economic Diversification: Troy's diverse economic base, particularly in manufacturing, healthcare, and retail, provides a foundation for future growth. Leveraging these sectors through targeted economic development strategies can attract new businesses and jobs.
Housing Development: The demand for diverse housing options, including affordable and senior living arrangements, presents an opportunity for development. Addressing the gap in market-rate rental and owner-occupied housing can meet current and future residents' needs.
Workforce Development: Investing in education and workforce development programs can enhance Troy's attractiveness to high-tech and innovative industries, contributing to the city's economic resilience.
Quality of Life Enhancements: Continued investment in public amenities, green spaces, and community services can enhance Troy's quality of life, making it a more attractive destination for residents and businesses alike.
Strategic Planning: Utilizing the comprehensive plan to guide development can ensure that Troy grows in a way that preserves its character while addressing demographic challenges.
In conclusion, while our hometowns faces demographic challenges similar to many small cities, it also possesses unique opportunities. Strategic planning and targeted initiatives can address these challenges, leveraging Troy's strengths to ensure a vibrant and sustainable future for generations to come.
