Miami County Land Reutilization Corporation Secures Over $2 Million for Brownfield Projects
Dollars Going Towards Projects in Piqua
There is an old saying, “Good gets better, bad gets worse”. Well, if you are one of those following the Miami County Land Reutilization Corporation, the good news just keeps on getting better. Last month, this publication went in depth as it was announced that the group secured over $1.7 Million for demolition projects across the county. This was on top of an early grant this fall that was announced to do an environmental assessment on a property just south of Troy.
Yesterday, the Ohio Department of Development announced that the group has now secured an additional amount of over $2 Million for two major projects in Piqua. The projects are outlined below in the department’s press release:
The first project will tackle the abatement of asbestos and limited demolition of the former Piqua Power Plant on South Main Street. The property has been the focus of redevelopment opportunities for quite some time. In 2014, the City of Piqua received over $1.4 Million from the Clean Ohio Revitalization Fund to remediate the land between the Power Plant and the Great Miami River. The land became an attractive park that connects the Great Miami River Recreational Trail with the Great Miami River with benches and a scenic overlook.
The second project looks to take on environmental assessment of an abandoned gas station on the city’s south side that used to be a Starfire Express gas station. The assessment will help determine the level of contamination in the ground and help develop a strategy to remediate the site for future development. Together, the two projects represent a huge investment by the State of Ohio and the County’s Land Reutilization Corporation into the City of Piqua.
This publication talked a bit about what these county land reutilization corporations do, along with the other community and economic development corporations that are common.
