Over 900 Votes Cast on the First day of Early Voting in Miami County
Early voting continues to be a popular option that more voters are using
Tuesday was the first day of Early Voting here in Miami County, as it was for the entire State of Ohio, and if the numbers are indication, Early Voting is very popular.
Voter data is released every evening by the Miami County Board of Elections showing how many people voted early along with other data points on absentee voting. While the votes are collected, there is no data on how voters actually voted. Those results will be collected and tabulated on the evening of Election Day.
The data released on the Board of Elections website shows that 939 early votes were cast at the Board of Election on Tuesday, which shows a trend that early voting is growing in popularity. Data for the past three presidential elections are below.
Here are a few observations from the data.
Early Voting Growing: From 2016 to 2020, the first day early vote grew by 116%, which is somewhat understandable given that 2020 was at the height of the Coronavirus/Covid-19 Pandemic. But the numbers are showing that there were 30% more early votes cast in 2024 than 2020. It will be interesting to see if these numbers continue to show growth as the early voting season continues.
Republicans Start Strong: Republicans make up over 69% of all registered voters in Miami County, and over one half of the first-day early votes were cast by these voters. This is a very high number compared to previous presidential election cycles for Republicans.
Where Did The Democrats GO?: Looking at the first-day early voting numbers, those voters cast by registered democrats continue to decline on a percentage basis. In 2016, nearly 40% of all first-day early votes were cast by registered democrats, by 2024 that number plummeted to less than 16%.
Non-Party Voters Are Growing: As the percentage of registered democrats are plummeting in the first-day early vote, the number of votes cast by non-party voters increased to over 33%. In terms of raw votes, the number of non-party voters on the first-day of early voting increased by 464% from 2016 to 2024.
It will be interesting to see if these trends hold up over the early voting season. This publication will dive into these numbers and give insights as our community gets closer to Election Day on November 5th.
This week, early voting continues at the Board of Elections in the Old Miami County Courthouse in Downtown Troy from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Voters will need an acceptable ID in order to vote.
