The Civic Capacity Countdown - #4: So, you want to be a School Board Member?
This edition of our newsletter has turned out to be one of the most popular
Publishing this newsletter has taught me a few lessons. One of the most important lessons is that good information is always wanted. Most posts hit with a splash and then eventually tail off. But occasionally, an edition gets published, and it starts slow but eventually gets some traction. That is this edition for sure.
Last Summer, this publication took some time to talk about what it took to get on the ballot as a school board member. And it’s not as cut and dry as one might think. For one, depending on the district you live in, there are different signature requirements.
We have learned that these seats, that come with four year terms, are vitally important. These local governments receive massive amounts of locally generated income and property taxes, and also receive state and federal funds to educate children. There is the responsibility of ensuring educational standards are met and services provided for our community’s youngest members. On top of that, school districts are large employers and have massive amounts of buildings and grounds that they have responsibility for.
It’s an important job in a community of any size, and school districts and taxpayers will always benefit when talented people campaign for these positions.
