The Civic Capacity Countdown - #6: The State of our Villages
One of our early editions openly wondered who will lead our county's villages in the future.
We are just days away when Civic Capacity turns one year old. Right now, this publication is putting out an evening series that is looking back over some of our most popular and most consequential pieces of work.
Today’s piece comes is one of our earliest pieces, but it covers a topic that is going to be critical to the future of our county — how our county’s villages are have long been in a population decline.
This piece is timely, if for no other reason I went on a bit of a bicycle tour last week in our county’s northeasters quadrant; there is a new bike path from Garbry’s Big Woods Reserve to the Poor Farmer’s RV Mobile Home Park that I had the chance to explore. This bike path goes right through the southern edge of one of the communities highlighted in this article, Fletcher.
And as I went through Fletcher on my bicycle; I was a little surprised to see a new subdivision being built out on the village’s southeast side. Seeing residential development in a relatively small village might show signs of life in this once (and maybe still) sleepy community.
