The Civic Capacity Countdown - #9: New Housing Planned for Subdivision on Fenner Road
The City's Planning Commission has been busy approving housing subdivisions; this story from March discusses a new housing subdivision off of Fenner Road.
It’s just nine days until the Civic Capacity celebrates its first full year of publishing relevant and valuable information to our communities here in Miami County. To help mark the milestone, this publication for the next few days is going to countdown ten of the most widely read and most impactful stories that have been written the past year at Civic Capacity.
This publication is growing each and every day and whether you have been with us from day one or just yesterday, looking back at these stories help remind all of us how far we have come, not just as a publication, but also as a community.
Since the first of the year, the City’s Planning Commission has approved a number of new housing subdivisions. One of those subdivisions was this one on from March that is planning on adding 136 new housing lots to the community at build out.
Housing is becoming more and more of a difficult issue to tackle in the community. These new housing developments aren’t providing a great remedy to an environment where most people in the community aren’t finding housing they can afford, especially if these folks tend to have a manufacturing job, which is the highest employment sector in the community.
The issue isn’t necessarily trying to build more affordable housing. Whether we like it or not, that is a loaded term with less than positive connotations. Rather, our community is experiencing a shortage of housing people can afford. The traditional American Dream of even the dual-income household being able to become owners (and not renters) of safe and decent housing seems more and more out of reach for so many of our neighbors.

ENOUGH of the new subdivisions!!! Our roadways and derives are already overcrowded/over extended. ANY new subdivision should be put to vote by citizens, not tax hungry bureaucrats! We, the taxpayers, are tired of having our property taxes increased due to the ever rising cost of the new housing (averaging $375k) and we’re flat out sick of the overcrowding and traffic!
Question, where are all these new homeowners going to come from and where are they working if not retirees?
