You can tell a lot about a community by what a community wants and what a community doesn’t want — and traditionally zoning codes are one of the few places where that can be explicitly spelled out.

As Troy is working through its draft Unified Development Code, two particular uses have been noted. Data centers, a controversial land use, are more than welcome in town, as long as certain standards are met. Tattoo parlors, on the other hand, aren’t welcome at all. They were unfortunate enough to make the prohibited-use list, along with other uses such as cannabis retailers and gambling establishments.

It is a notable dichotomy.
