One of the most fascinating aspects of this election seeing has been seeing the consistent lines at the Miami County Courthouse of voters casting early ballots this election season. Anecdotal stories have relayed that this has been one of the busiest seasons for early voting. Does the data back those claims up? Let’s dive into some of the numbers.
Friday, November 1st was the busiest day for in-person early voting; over 1,500 people showed up to vote. In fact, each full day of early voting since October 21st had over 1,000 voters show up to cast ballots. In other words, early voting started out strong and just got stronger as we inched closer to Election Day.
The final early vote tally showed that 23,167 votes were cast, this figure is roughly 10% higher than the 21,128 early voters that showed up during the last Presidential Election. During the 2020 Presidential Election, voter turnout was registered at 77%, a pretty high number. If the 77% figure holds for this election, that would be a total number of votes being cast at roughly 60,623. In effect, roughly 38% of the votes have already been cast via early in-person voting. When data for mail-in and other forms of voting have been added, over half (53%) of the ballots cast are already either in the Board of Elections office or in the mail.
The data also shows that while early voting is up, it’s not up with all party registrations. Republicans are dominating the early in-person vote, as the number of registered republicans early voting grew by 37% between the 2020 and 2024 election cycles; nearly 10,000 Republicans have already cast their ballot via early voting. In 2020, nearly 7,300 Republican voters turned out for the early vote. Democratic voters have seen their early vote numbers shrink by 9% and non-party voters are down by 4% since the last election cycle.
The data also shows where the votes are coming from. It is no surprise, that Troy is leading the early vote, over 8,200 ballots from the community have been cast, which is roughly 43% of all the community’s voters. 3,568 ballots have come from Tipp City, which is nearly 45% of all Tipp City voters. In Piqua, 3,744 early vote ballots have been cast, which shows a voter turnout of 29% and in the Miami County portion of Huber Heights, 1,651 ballots have been cast; a turnout of 39%.
Election Day is tomorrow and polls at local precincts will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
