Civic Capacity Mailbag
Today we tackle an acronym that we hear about anytime we are talking road projects
In this month’s mailbag, we had a reader ask what exactly is the MVRPC? Well take a moment and imagine a team that is desgined to look into the future and think about big challenges while making our neighborhoods and communities better. That's exactly what the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) is charged to accomplish on a daily basis. This critical organization believes that by working together and planning ahead, our region, and our communities, can solve tough problems and create a better place to live. MVRPC is important because it helps our local governments in Miami County get the money they need for important projects like building roads and recreational trails. They also work with these governments to make sure we have great places to enjoy the outdoors while taking care of our environment. In today’s newsletter, we dive into the world of MVRPC and discover how they make a positive impact on our communities.
A Journey Through Time: MVRPC's Beginnings
MVRPC has a long history that started when cities and regions were growing quickly in the 1960s. With all these changes happening, it was critical to plan for the future. In 1964, Ohio's leaders realized the importance of having groups like MVRPC to help with planning; the General Assembly created entities known as “Metropolitan Planning Organizations”. The State wanted to create these planning organizations to figure out where to build things, how to manage traffic, and how to keep our environment clean. This is where MVRPC stepped in, becoming a leader among similar groups across the country. MVRPC's goal was to bring different groups and local governments together to find solutions for the challenges that our region faced.
Uniting for a Better Tomorrow: MVRPC's Role
The main idea behind MVRPC's work is to help local governments collaborate, protect the environment, and use our resources wisely. They understood that problems affecting our area were too big for any one town to solve on its own. By joining forces with towns, counties, and other groups, MVRPC aimed to create a better Miami Valley for all of us to enjoy.
Diverse Ways MVRPC Makes a Difference
Creating Efficient Ways to Move: MVRPC is really good at planning how we get around. They help build roads, bridges, and paths for bikes and walking. So, when you ride your bike on a new path or drive on a new road, MVRPC might have had a hand in making it possible.
Choosing Where to Build: MVRPC doesn’t hold the final decision power on where new things like houses and businesses should be built. However, there ability to steer funding towards specific projects and their work on Facility Planning Areas are often used by local governments to inform development decisions.
Guardians of Nature: MVRPC’s work does impact our air, water, forests, and rivers. They work with others to protect our natural resources and they encourage the use of resources wisely to keep our environment clean and healthy.
Getting Everyone Involved: MVRPC listens to lots of people to understand what they want. They organize meetings and events where everyone can share their thoughts about how our area should look and work. If you have ever been to a MVRPC open house, it is obvious that this group takes citizen participation as a high priority in their work.
