This publication has always treated these pages as an open forum, an opportunity for the public to share their ideas, their thoughts and their opinions. Today, we welcome an endorsement piece advocating for Damon Wilson to serve the City of Piqua as a member of the City Commission. Today’s endorsement piece comes from Paul Simmons, an incumbent member of the City Commission. Here is Mr. Simmons, in his own words.
I am writing this to endorse the man I think is the best candidate for the Piqua Ward Three seat. That man is Damon Wilson. While it is true that I didn’t know Damon prior to his entering the election race, we have had several very productive conversations since we were introduced – and I can state emphatically that the majority of our goals are entirely aligned!
Damon understands the need for transparency in government, and he knows that none of us (including me, and I’m part of it!) are getting that and have not been getting that for some time. Commissioners (other than myself) meet, in secret, with the City Manager, in a manner that is contrary to the Sunshine Laws of the State of Ohio (see The State ex. rel. Cincinnati Post v. The City of Cincinnati, for case precedent). The public comments in our meetings have been ushered straight to the “meeting after the meeting”, where people are heard by a few (because the video gets cut off), and the city staff – including the City Manager – get a “hall pass” so that the people cannot redress their grievances with him.
Damon is also a big fan of the Hance Pavillion, as am I. I understand we have some issues that we are facing with ODNR but, in my opinion, we need to do what it takes to preserve that property and the cemetery, and then restore that facility to its original glory, for future generations to appreciate!
I’m only one voice, out of five. Some of you reading this have been my champions in this area, as well as with the struggles we have had here at home. For both, you have my thanks. Some of you might not have heard of me. Some of you may be my detractors – I know I have a few…possibly more, because I may be involved with politics, but I refuse to be a politician! Regardless, when you see an endorsement, you need to pay attention to who they’re endorsing, and who is writing the endorsement!
One of the complaints that we have heard from people coming to meetings is that the people who speak up at the meetings, or speak out against the status quo, later get code enforcement violations! If that’s the case, and you want to see change in Piqua, you should probably vote for the guy who got an email about code enforcement issues…but not until after he entered the race! I’m certain it was all just a coincidence – but I also know that if Damon Wilson is elected, he is a person I can truly work with to make the changes that our city so desperately needs.
