My nail tech and I talked about this plan last week. She works in a downtown salon. She was not impressed with the plans for the square and thought that it might make an already congested traffic situation worse. I agreed. The city needs input, discussion, and thought on these changes before making them.
Bill - Good article. You are so correct in your statements. Too often planners / consultants can mess up a good thing IMHO. The square / traffic circle works as it is intended and has for many years.
On the other hand, is there such a thing as pedestrian engineers? Probably, somewhere, If we’re talking highway traffic, then this would not be so relevant. But you can’t separate the two when it comes to our Square.
Take it back to the way it was before King Patrick’s “road diet”. As a tax paying citizen, I’m absolutely tired of having to sit in traffic as far back as Walgreens (and as short as the Post Office) in the evening trying to get home or being stuck on the north side of the Market Street bridge trying to leave town in the morning. This “reconstruction” several years back was beyond ignorant and changing it to restrict traffic flow even more is even more stupid.
Is the Walgreens more of a problem with the new traffic light configuration at S. Market/W. Market/E. West Sts.? I was driving south on S. Market one afternoon and had to wait three cycles before going through the intersection.

Absolutely. The meeting on the 22nd is another opportunity for residents to give their input.

I don't want to sound snarky, but it doesn't make sense to bring in traffic engineers to solve pedestrian problems.

Kudos for getting the citizens plugged in.
Pedestrian’s can abide by a light - put it back the way it was!
I agree, you can't separate the two, but there needs some attention to be paid to our pedestrians.
What I meant to imply was exactly that.
Got it!

That definitely does not help with the other lane restrictions put in place over the last few years.
