Progress is important for a city to continue to grow . History is also important to remember what got us here. I am always sad when we destroy Historical building. I wish we had city planners with the vision to keep and develop these structures for more modern use.

City planners did manage to keep the building in use for a century. I too am sad at the loss of historic buildings like Van Cleve, so I hope costs of alternative use were well investigated. Definitely not needed are another dollar type store or gas station. Could there be a fast food restaurant that serves food that is healthy/nutritious? Cheese, crackers and apple slices, anyone? Would Troy citizens pay for healthy snacks, drinks and meals rather than burgers, fries and ice cream? They would still be available!

The school could be converted to apartments.

I am not sure how viable this idea is. One of the biggest concerns that has been brought to the building is that it is not air-conditioned and this building isn't fully used for the summer months. How warm would those apartments be? What is the cost to retrofit? These could be some pretty sizable hurdles to overcome.

Leadership needed to deal with community needs vs “but not next to me” concerns.

Why do I think I've already seen a plan for this area? I thought they were going to build water front condos where Spinnaker was at.

I know they have to demolish the school because we are going to receive state funding to build the new schools (this was part of the agreement).

I'll almost bet that there will be another bunch of condos on this land too.

I think it would be great to have a little restaurant added here, but bet if they make it commercial, it'll be a Dollar General,Family Dollar, or Subway.

The City's Riverfront MKSK plan talked about putting in "Riverfront Condos" but those were planned more the Hobart Cabinet building near N. Clay and W. Water Sts.

White Sulphur Springs WV is famous as the home of the Greenbriar Resort, but there's another hotel in town called the Schoolhouse Hotel. Some investors took an old high school and converted it into a really nice boutique hotel and event venue. It could be a nice reuse of the VanCleve property. Check it out on line: www.theschoolhousehotelwv.com.

Interesting but I tend to agree with Bill. The cost to create a boutique hotel must have been so expensive that the cost to stay there are rent the space would be very high. VERY high. Would visitors to Troy Ohio be willing to pay really big bucks for lodging?

I’m thinking low income affordable housing and a child and adult daycare facility that low to moderate income people could afford, would serve the community better. Hmmm. What else would be beneficial? 🤔
